The Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) has sealed five industries for environmental infractions. The companies, which include Nixim Paper Limited, Long Xiang Aluminum, New Shidai Manufacturing Limited, and two unregistered companies, were shut down after they failed to comply with environmental regulations and ignored a stop work order issued by OGEPA.
The companies were found to be discharging untreated wastewater into their immediate communities, which is a serious violation of environmental standards. The state government received petitions from the communities complaining about the incessant discharge of wastewater.
The Chairman of the Ogun State Taskforce on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement, Farook Akintunde, said that the companies were shut down in the overriding public interest and that they must stop their harmful environmental practice. The Special Adviser to the Governor on OGEPA, Dr. Oluwadare Kehinde, added that the companies will be forced to abide by waste water regulations in the state, which is crucial for preventing water pollution and maintaining water quality standards.
The two unregistered companies were also ordered to register with the state government and fulfill other operational obligations before they can be allowed to operate in the state.
