The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter at Gombe State University has declared an indefinite strike, marking its first strike in 21 years. The union has been left with no choice but to take drastic action due to the prolonged and unresolved welfare concerns that have been neglected for too long.
The ASUU branch chairman, Dr. Suleiman Salihu Jauro, announced the strike, citing the unacceptable teaching and learning conditions that have been allowed to persist. Despite numerous attempts to resolve the issues peacefully, the government’s failure to meet the key demands has led to this decision.
Specifically, the union is highlighting the non-implementation of the 2021 Memorandum of Action (MoA), which included financial commitments from the Gombe State government. The unpaid promotion arrears and unfulfilled wage awards have further compounded the challenges faced by the academic staff, leading to a sense of urgency and a need for immediate action.
The strike aims to bring attention to these pressing issues and to push the government to take concrete steps towards resolving them. The ASUU members are seeking a fair and just resolution to their concerns, which will enable them to continue providing quality education to students without being hindered by the prevailing welfare concerns.
