Lagos State Police Command has arrested two women, Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, for allegedly selling newborn twins. According to police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the arrest was made possible by a tip-off from a concerned citizen.
The suspects were apprehended by patrol officers from Ojodu Division stationed at Berger bus-stop, who had been alerted about the women by a good Samaritan. The officers found the women with two newborn baby girls, approximately six days old, while they were traveling from Abia State to Lagos on September 9.
During questioning, the suspects confessed to the crime and revealed that they had been paid ₦150,000 for transporting the babies to Lagos. They claimed that the babies’ mother sold them because she was unable to provide proper care.
The case was transferred to the Gender Unit of the Command, where the newborns were placed in the custody of a motherless babies home for proper care and medical evaluation. An investigation is ongoing to arrest other conspirators involved in the crime.
The arrested suspects were arraigned on Thursday.
