The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has expressed profound sadness over the devastating helicopter crash that resulted in the deaths of eight oil workers, including two devoted union officials.In a statement issued by NUPENG President Prince Williams Akporeha and General Secretary Afolabi Olawale, the union extended its heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), and Arion Energy Services Ltd. The union emphasized that this tragedy is a significant loss for both the oil and gas sector and the workforce as a whole.The Eastwind Aviation helicopter, transporting the eight individuals, crashed into the Bonny River on October 24, 2024, while en route from Port Harcourt Military Base to the offshore facility FPSO NUIM ANTAN.Among those who lost their lives were Comrade Boris Dorbi, Branch Chairman of NUPENG, and Comrade Lawrence Alu, a respected member of the NUIM Antan Branch. “Their untimely deaths represent a tremendous loss to the oil and gas industry and our collective workforce,” the statement noted.NUPENG praised the recovery efforts spearheaded by the governments of Rivers and Akwa Ibom States, the Federal Ministry of Aviation, and various agencies involved. “In mourning our fallen comrades and colleagues, we stand together in grief and offer our prayers and condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected by this tragedy,” NUPENG affirmed.The union reiterated its commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety and welfare of its members and the broader community. “May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their families find the strength to endure these profound losses,” the statement concluded.
