The new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, has yet to start the traditional rites that will lead to his coronation. This comes despite receiving the staff of office and certificate of appointment from Governor Seyi Makinde on January 13, 2024. Makinde had announced that the coronation would take place in four weeks, but Owoade’s trip to Canada has delayed the process.
Owoade, a Nigerian and Canadian entrepreneur, philanthropist, and president of 100279 Manitoba Limited, had to return to Canada to officially resign from his workplaces and engagements. “He is still in Canada, perfecting his papers before returning to Oyo,” a source revealed.
The traditional rites, which will take around a month to complete, involve several individuals and groups playing key roles in guaranteeing the spiritual well-being and authority of the Alaafin. These include the Oluawo (Ifa priest), the Oyo Mesi, priests, and priestesses. The rites also involve the Alaafin-elect visiting various places, including the Baba Iyaji residence, Ona Isokun, Ilemole, and Bara, before proceeding to the Koso chamber.
Owoade’s coronation is highly anticipated, as he succeeds the late Lamidi Adeyemi III, who reigned for over 50 years. The Alaafin of Oyo is a revered position, with a rich history dating back to the 14th century.
