The Ogun State government has suspended a traditional ruler, the Olorile of Orile Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Adewale Ogunjobi, for a period of six months.
This decision comes after he was recorded leading an assault on a 73-year-old man in a viral video. In the footage circulating online, Oba Ogunjobi can be heard hurling curses at the elderly man, who was kneeling and pleading for mercy. Meanwhile, individuals believed to be his thugs intermittently slapped the victim.
The traditional ruler also issued threats to kill or imprison the man, who had expressed his ill health, while boasting about his supposed connections to law enforcement.Reports indicate that the Oba’s anger stemmed from the fact that the 73-year-old did not support his claim to the throne.
Following the incident, both the traditional ruler and the victim were invited for interrogation by the Ogun Commissioner for the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Monday.
The Ministry stated that the suspension of the traditional ruler was necessary due to his reckless utterances and public misconduct, which were evident in various social media platforms and had caused public outrage. After conducting an investigation, officials decided to suspend the Kabiyesi and strip him of the privileges associated with the Olorile-Ifo title until the allegations against him are resolved.
This decision was made in collaboration with the Egba Traditional Council, in accordance with Section 52(1) of the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State 2021.
Additionally, the Ogun State Police Command announced on Monday that they have also summoned the traditional ruler regarding the viral assault video.It has been reported that the Oba is a retired police officer, while the victim, identified as Chief Oloye Areola Abraham, is known to have faced harassment from the Oba and his thugs in the community, allegedly due to the Oba’s background as a former officer.
