Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, envisions transforming Ogun into a hub of academic excellence and innovation.

This vision aligns with his government’s commitment to making Ogun the education capital of Nigeria.During the 2023/2024 session convocation of Olabisi Onabanjo University, the governor awarded the overall best graduating student, Miss Dauda Aishat Anuoluwapo, a sum of #3 million. Additionally, 14 other outstanding students received #500,000 each for their exceptional performances across different faculties.

Governor Abiodun made this announcement in his address at the university’s 34th convocation ceremony, which took place at the OGD Hall on the main campus in Ago Iwoye. Represented by his deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, he reiterated that his administration has implemented various capacity-building programs and policies to enhance access to quality education.

He emphasized the vital role of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in fostering research and community service, which are essential to achieving academic excellence.

The governor assured attendees that his administration remains committed to advancing educational infrastructure.

This includes plans for modern lecture halls, state-of-the-art laboratories, student accommodation, and recreational facilities.

He also highlighted the government’s dedication to expanding e-learning infrastructure and digital resources to equip students with the necessary tools for global competition.Governor Abiodun referenced the NELFUND initiative under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which supports students across tertiary institutions.

He expressed gratitude for TETFUND’s contributions to enhancing state tertiary institutions and revealed plans to establish a state Education Trust Fund in 2020 for infrastructure development in institutions not covered by TETFUND.

He called upon individuals, corporate organizations, and the private sector to partner with the government in advancing educational development in Ogun State.

He stressed that the responsibility for educational progress lies with everyone and encouraged a collective effort to ensure quality education for every child.

The governor also congratulated Dr. Adekunle Hassan for receiving an honorary Doctor of Science degree and thanked him for his generous donations to the institution.Governor Abiodun urged graduating students to embody the values and principles that shaped their education, encouraging them to be innovative problem solvers and leaders in their fields as they enter a world filled with opportunities and challenges.In their remarks, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Prof. Toyin Ashiru, along with Vice Chancellor Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, commended Governor Abiodun for his presence at the ceremony, affirming the significance placed on education by his administration.

They recounted significant milestones achieved in recent years, including the expansion of academic programs and infrastructure development.

The duo encouraged graduating students to pursue their dreams fearlessly and to use their knowledge and skills to make a meaningful impact in society.Convocation lecturer and Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), Architect Sunday Echono, highlighted TETFUND’s achievements in infrastructural projects across educational institutions.

However, he pointed out the necessity for increased investment in the education sector and a sustainable funding approach for institutions in Nigeria.

He urged a shift towards a more flexible and diversified educational philosophy to ensure competitiveness.In her valedictory speech, Miss Dauda Aishat Anuoluwapo shared the challenges faced during their journey to success, thanking the state government for its unwavering support and appreciating the contributions of the university’s management and staff in shaping their academic experience.
