The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) has issued a strong warning to the University of Benin (UNIBEN) management, demanding a reversal of the recent fee hikes announced on the institution’s website within 96 hours. In their statement, NANS instructed all UNIBEN students to refrain from paying the increased fees until the administration retracts this decision.
The student organization pledged to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to safeguard student rights. In response, the UNIBEN Students’ Union (SU) has distanced itself from NANS’ ultimatum, clarifying that they were neither consulted nor involved in the release of the memo.
The SU emphasized its dedication to protecting student interests through dialogue and structured negotiations, rather than through external interference.
The SU does not welcome NANS’ intrusion into UNIBEN students’ affairs,” the union stated. Our focus is on ensuring transparent and effective representation of student interests, free from external influences that do not align with our collective well-being.Additionally, the UNIBEN SU called upon students to disregard the NANS Zone B memo, asserting that it does not reflect the views of the UNIBEN student body.
We assure you that we will persist in advocating for the best possible outcomes for all students, the SU added.
The Students’ Union remains the primary representative and channel for addressing student concerns with the university management.
