President Bola Tinubu honored former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, on his 60th birthday, acknowledging his unwavering commitment to democracy, governance, and national development.
In a statement released on Sunday, Tinubu reflected on his longstanding friendship with Fayemi, which began during their shared activism in the pro-democracy movement of the 1990s, when they fought against military rule During the difficult era of General Sani Abacha, civil rights and pro-democracy activists, particularly those in exile, had to be resourceful to survive.
Kayode’s intellect, dedication, and tactical acumen were crucial to our efforts,Tinubu remarked.He emphasized Fayemi’s involvement in advocating for the release of Chief MKO Abiola and the restoration of the June 12, 1993, presidential election results, recounting how the military regime suppressed press freedom and targeted activists.
A pro-democracy radio station was essential for covering the activities of the movement, both domestically and abroad.
Dr. Fayemi and other activists played a key role in launching Radio Kudirat, named in memory of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola,” Tinubu noted.
He observed that after Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999, Fayemi established the Centre for Democracy and Development to promote peace and security throughout Africa.
He entered politics in 2006, running for the Ekiti governorship in 2007 under the Action Congress.Although he initially faced a setback, Fayemi pursued legal recourse, and after a three-year battle, he was declared the rightful governor in 2010 following a court-ordered re-run.
Tinubu also recognized Fayemi’s significant role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013, where he chaired the presidential primary panel that selected Muhammadu Buhari as the party’s candidate.In addition, he served as Director of Policy in the APC/Buhari campaign in 2015, which culminated in the historic ousting of an incumbent president.After his tenure as Minister of Mines and Steel Development in Buhari’s government, Fayemi returned to serve as Ekiti State governor in 2018.
Tinubu praised his leadership, stating, As a two-term governor, he managed the state during challenging economic conditions and undoubtedly left a lasting impact on Ekiti State governance.
The president further commended Fayemi’s loyalty to the APC, recalling his selfless decision to step aside for him during the 2023 APC presidential primaries, showcasing his “remarkable humility and camaraderie.”“With our lengthy collaboration in both party and national politics, Fayemi has been a steadfast ally, a dedicated lieutenant, and a committed patriot,” Tinubu remarked.Celebrating Fayemi’s accomplishments as an academic, author, administrator, and development expert, Tinubu wished him ongoing health and success.
