The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a strong warning to Nigeria Police Force officers against carrying rifles while in civilian clothing (mufti) and engaging in human rights violations.
In a statement released on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, it was revealed that the IG communicated this directive during a virtual meeting with senior strategic managers at the Force Headquarters.
Egbetokun emphasized that the Force had received numerous complaints regarding human rights abuses via its official complaint channels, making it essential to remind officers of the need to avoid such misconduct.
He warned that any further human rights violations would lead to serious repercussions and urged officers to refrain from misusing their authority while also adhering to appropriate dress codes.Additionally, he stated, “No operative should be seen carrying assault rifles while dressed in civilian attire.
All tactical units must comply with standard operating procedures and wear the designated uniforms for their respective units.”Adejobi also mentioned that the IGP condemned the unwarranted transfer of cases without his written consent, labeling this practice as “highly prohibited” and making it clear that it will not be tolerated moving forward.”Such actions create unnecessary challenges for those involved and delay the pursuit of justice,” he noted.
The statement concluded with a directive from the IGP for all officers, irrespective of rank, to collaborate in preventing any misconduct that could damage the reputation of the Force.
