Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, officially inaugurated the newly elected local government chairmen and councillors following Saturday’s elections. During the ceremony held in Osogbo, he emphasized the importance of good governance and warned against any attempts to forcibly occupy council secretariats.
Adeleke extended his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his efforts in maintaining stability in Osun State amidst challenges.Describing the event as a significant milestone in the state’s democratic journey, the governor underscored that the elections were conducted in accordance with legal protocols. “We are here to conclude a democratic process for which we all laboured so hard to achieve,” he stated, before observing a moment of silence for those who lost their lives during the “illegal APC takeover of local government secretariats.
The governor highlighted the organized approach taken by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, which issued election notices a year in advance and adhered to all relevant regulations. Despite acknowledging legal challenges surrounding the election, he affirmed that his administration acted lawfully and expressed satisfaction with the transparency of the electoral process.
He charged the newly sworn-in officials to act as “agents of change, community developers, and deliverers of the dividends of democracy,” urging them to implement the vision of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in their respective local governments.
He reassured the people of Osun regarding his administration’s commitment to their welfare: “Osun people demonstrated courage and passion in exercising their voting rights. We will not fail you. Your welfare will remain our top priority.”Adeleke also praised the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, security agencies, and government officials for their roles in the election’s success. In a noteworthy moment, he recognized President Bola Tinubu for resisting attempts to destabilize the state. “I am most grateful to Mr. President for rejecting efforts by some forces to plunge Osun into chaos,” he remarked.
The governor issued a strong warning against confrontations at council secretariats, referring to an ongoing legal process aimed at resolving the leadership crisis.
He urged the newly elected officials to refrain from any actions that might lead to clashes with those who have unlawfully occupied the secretariats. Citing a ruling from the Osun State High Court affirming vacancies in the positions, he assured that his administration would work with the judiciary to address these illegal occupations.With these directives, Adeleke officially declared the swearing-in of the newly elected local government officials.
