The management of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University of Agriculture, Makurdi, previously known as the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, has announced the closure of the university.
This decision was communicated through an internal memo titled “Security Situation on Campus,” which was issued on Wednesday and signed by the Registrar, Dr. John David.
The university has confirmed that three students were abducted by unidentified armed men on Tuesday around 8:00 pm, specifically between Zamfara Hostel and Ring Road in North Core.In response to this alarming incident, the management strongly condemned the act and assured that both the government and security agencies have been informed.
Furthermore, the inaugural lecture scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed indefinitely, and students have been instructed to vacate their hostels to allow the university authorities to address the ongoing security issues.”In solidarity with the students and families of those abducted, the university management has granted all students a one-week mid-semester break to effectively tackle the security challenges on campus. Thus, all students must vacate their hostels by 4:00 pm today, February 26, 2025,” the memo stated.
A senior university staff member, who wished to remain anonymous, had previously confirmed the kidnapping incident involving the female students, noting that they were on their way to study at the time of the abduction.
The incident has led to protests on campus, with students demanding that the university take immediate action to secure the release of their fellow students.Chief Superintendent of Police Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Benue State Command, acknowledged the incident, stating, “We have received reports of two students being kidnapped by unknown gunmen.
