The Lagos State House of Assembly is experiencing a significant crisis marked by the withdrawal of all security personnel assigned to Speaker Mojisola Meranda, leaving her vulnerable amid ongoing leadership disputes. An aide to the Speaker disclosed that the police and Department of State Services (DSS) officers were withdrawn without replacement, prompting concerns for her safety.
The aide urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene urgently. The situation intensified when Olalekan Onafeko, the former and suspended Clerk of the House, attempted to return to his position but was turned away by security personnel, leading to a public uproar from Assembly staff.
This turmoil follows the January 13 ousting of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, replaced by Meranda. Despite attempts by national and state leaders to mediate the conflict, including efforts by President Bola Tinubu and the Governance Advisory Council, no resolution has been achieved.
Stakeholders are now calling for immediate measures to restore safety and order in the Assembly.
