Moshood Jimoh, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, has announced that the security detail for Mojisola Meranda, the Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, has been reinstated.
During a press briefing on Thursday, Jimoh explained that her security aides were originally withdrawn for audit purposes. Earlier, a high-ranking official within the Lagos Assembly confirmed to The Cable that Meranda’s security team had been removed earlier that morning. “Yes, it’s accurate.
It’s important for people to understand that this woman did not impose herself as Speaker. She was elected by 33 of the 40 members of the House, which is a significant majority,” the source stated. “We need to ask ourselves: is this happening because she’s a woman? Many women are also questioning the situation.
How long will we continue to uphold these traditions?”Following this, Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker, arrived at the assembly complex with a substantial security presence.
A source informed TheCable that Obasa’s security aides had also been restored that morning.
In a statement to journalists at the assembly, Obasa declared that he has resumed his role as the leader of the assembly, claiming that his removal was not conducted according to proper procedures.Obasa presided over a “plenary session” attended by only four lawmakers, despite the assembly comprising 40 members, with the majority choosing not to participate in the session, though they were present at the complex.
The Lagos legislature has faced turmoil since Obasa’s removal from the Speaker position on January 13.Meranda was subsequently elected as his replacement, making history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly. On February 17, the House passed a vote of confidence in Meranda, after which she adjourned the plenary session indefinitely amid rumors that pressure was mounting for her to resign. Obasa has consistently contested the legitimacy of the impeachment process, arguing that proper procedures were not followed and asserting his claim to remain the rightful Speaker.
