President Bola Tinubu has officially approved the designation of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, as a federal university, making it the first federally-owned tertiary institution in the Ogun East senatorial district.
The announcement was conveyed in a press release on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.Founded by the Ogun State Government in 2005, TASUED is notable for being Nigeria’s first specialized university of education.In his statement, Tinubu expressed appreciation to the Ogun State Government for its invitation to the Federal Government to take over one of the state’s premier educational institutions.
He emphasized that this transition honors the legacies of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Dr. Tai Solarin. “This is an opportunity for the Federal Government to pay tribute to Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who initiated the revolutionary free education program in Western Nigeria, and to Dr. Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to educating our youth and instilling values of patriotism and leadership at Mayflower School in Ikenne,” Tinubu noted.
The President also recognized the contribution of the Awujale of Ijebuland in averting the closure of the university in 2012, just seven years after its establishment.The transition is expected to require minimal federal investment, thanks to TASUED’s established infrastructure and academic programs.
It aligns with the Federal Government’s efforts to enhance teacher education and improve instructional quality across the country.“With this new designation, the Federal Government now oversees three universities of education: TASUED, Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri, and Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo,” the statement added.
This decision marks a significant development in Ogun State’s educational landscape and underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to advancing higher education while honoring the contributions of prominent regional figures.
