The Niger State Police Command has initiated an investigation to locate and apprehend a police officer accused of going on a shooting spree while intoxicated, resulting in the death of a local resident.
Commissioner of Police Shuwala Danmamman has instructed the Divisional Police Officer of Maitumbi to identify the officer involved in this tragic incident, which took place in the early hours of Monday.
The officer, who is assigned to the Maitumbi Police Station, reportedly consumed a large amount of alcohol before picking up his firearm and firing at random.
During the incident, a resident identified only as Sani was shot and killed in the Angwan-Kaje area of Chanchaga Local Government Area. Eyewitnesses also reported that the officer attempted to shoot another local, a tea seller known as Mai Shayi, who managed to escape unharmed.
One eyewitness recounted, “The officer shot Sani while he was asleep. He also tried to shoot Mai Shayi, but he fled. Bullet shells were found at the scene.”
Wasiu Abiodun, the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed the incident and stated that the Commissioner of Police has ordered a thorough investigation, assuring the public that the officer responsible will be held accountable.
“The command received reports of the shooting incident, which occurred around 3 AM on March 10, 2025, at Angwan-Kaje, Maitumbi, Minna. The Commissioner of Police has directed the DPO of Maitumbi to investigate and identify the officer responsible for the act so that appropriate action can be taken,” Abiodun said.
He added, “Updates on the situation will be communicated to the public in due course.”
