The Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled against legalizing prostitution in Nigeria, dismissing a suit that aimed to protect the rights of sex workers in the Federal Capital Territory.
Justice James Omotosho stated that prostitution is immoral and incompatible with the country’s cultural values, allowing the Minister of the FCT and security agencies to continue arresting sex workers.
The court determined that prostitutes have no legal rights under Nigerian law and that their actions constitute an offense.
The suit was initiated by a non-governmental organization seeking to prevent harassment and prosecution of sex workers, but the court found the application insufficient and characterized the claim as promoting immorality. Justice Omotosho emphasized that prostitution is alien to Nigerian culture and affirmed the government’s right to enforce laws against it.
