The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) expressed deep concern over the recent surge in violence in Ondo State, highlighting the state’s significant role in establishing the Amotekun security initiative.
They are calling on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to enhance the effectiveness of Amotekun and other local security agencies to combat the increasing threat posed by criminal elements.
The council noted alarming incidents of violence, including killings, maiming, and kidnappings attributed to herdsmen and other miscreants, prompting local residents to protest in response to the escalating insecurity.In their statement, released on Sunday and attributed to Secretary-General Engr. Oladipo Oyewole, the YCE emphasized the urgent need for the governor to bolster the Amotekun Corps. “Given the security challenges facing the state, we urge Governor Aiyedatiwa to empower the Amotekun Corps to address these issues more effectively,” Oyewole stated.
He reiterated that strengthening the Western Security Network, known as Amotekun, is crucial to tackling the state’s security problems, asserting, “The centrality of security to governance is a fundamental principle.
Amotekun was established to enhance security across the Southwest and address vulnerabilities in the region.
Although it has made strides in mitigating insecurity, the current rise in violent incidents has left the YCE alarmed and seeking immediate action to protect innocent lives in Ondo State.
