The NLNG facility in Rivers State remains unscathed following a recent explosion at the Soku oil facility, which is operated by NLNG Limited. Although the explosion was confirmed, it reportedly did not damage the facility.
This incident comes as political tensions escalate in Rivers State, leading to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and several lawmakers by President Bola Tinubu, who declared a state of emergency to prevent governance collapse and potential violence tied to a power struggle within the state.Fubara made his first public appearance since the suspension at a church service in Port Harcourt, where he was warmly welcomed by supporters.
Meanwhile, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against Tinubu over what it describes as the unlawful suspension of democratic leaders.
The presidency has defended the suspensions, claiming they are necessary to stabilize governance and are not a power grab, highlighting intelligence reports of potential sabotage by militants in the region.
Contrary to initial reports, community leaders in the Soku kingdom stated that while there was a fire incident related to a gas pipeline, the Soku gas plant itself is operational and secure.
The exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
