Organised labour in Rivers State has issued a warning that it may initiate “strategic union actions” capable of disrupting national economic activities if President Bola Tinubu fails to reverse the emergency rule imposed on the state.

In a joint statement signed by the leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the unions expressed concern that the emergency rule has negatively impacted the timely payment of workers’ salaries.

The emergency rule was declared by President Tinubu on March 18 in response to the ongoing political crisis and instability in the oil-rich state.

As part of this declaration, he suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers Assembly for an initial six-month period.

In the wake of these actions, the President appointed Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired naval chief, as the state’s sole administrator.
