*Dr. Rafiu Bello, the Chairman of the Sharia Committee of Oyo Land, announced that the Sharia panel has officially been established and is already holding sittings in Oyo town.
In contrast, Governor Seyi Makinde stated that the state government intends to challenge the legality of this Sharia panel in court.
His Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, emphasized that the governor’s stance will be based on constitutional considerations and whether the establishment of a Sharia panel or court is permissible under the law.
The Sharia panel operates from the Central Mosque in Akesan, with sessions scheduled every Thursday from 10 am to 1 pm, and is presided over by knowledgeable figures in Sharia law.
Bello affirmed that the establishment of the panel is in line with Nigerian law, which permits the creation of such panels, and members of the public are welcome to attend the sittings. Previously, in January, the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria’s Oyo chapter had suspended plans for the panel’s inauguration due to public outcry.
Since then, Makinde has reiterated that his administration will remain aligned with the Constitution regarding this matter.
