A devastating fire has destroyed shops and goods estimated to be worth millions of naira during a nighttime incident at the well-known Iweka Road near Ochanja Market in Onitsha, Anambra State.According to reports, the fire broke out around 8:30 PM on Tuesday, engulfing numerous shops and turning valuable merchandise into ashes.
The exact cause of the blaze remains unknown, but it is believed to have burned for several minutes before firefighters arrived, as many traders had already left for the day.On Wednesday, the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, led by Fire Chief Chukwudi Chiketa, confirmed the incident.
They revealed that a distress call was received at approximately 9:40 PM, prompting the immediate deployment of firefighting crews and equipment to the scene. Chiketa stated, “The Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call at about 9:40 PM on Tuesday, March 25, regarding a raging fire outbreak at the popular Iweka Road, close to Ochanja Market in Onitsha. Our firefighters were quickly dispatched to the location and worked tirelessly to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading further.
The fire affected four shops, primarily housing furniture materials such as leather and foam, while many others were saved in a two-storey structure.
The specific cause of the fire is still under investigation. Fire crews remained on-site until 3:05 AM on Wednesday, March 26, to ensure the situation was fully under control.
