In 2024, Nasarawa State reported 35 deaths among 8,190 residents diagnosed with Tuberculosis (TB), as announced by Health Commissioner Dr. Gaza Gwamna during the World Tuberculosis Day events in Lafia.
This year’s theme, “Yes, we can end TB,” emphasizes the importance of collective action against this infectious disease, which has significantly impacted the local population.
The TB cases in 2024 rose by 12.6% from 2023, with 21% of patients also co-infected with HIV. The treatment success rate for TB is currently 89%, below the national goal of 95%. Notably, 627 children aged 0-14 were diagnosed with TB, representing 8.5% of cases, falling short of the 12% target.
The most affected age group is between 15-55 years, which contributes significantly to the economy.Additionally, the state recorded 60 cases of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (DRTB) last year, with a treatment center established in 2017 to assist complicated cases.
Various local governments contributed to the overall TB statistics, with areas like Nasarawa and Obi showing notable case numbers.
The Ministry of Health is working with partners to combat TB and improve awareness among the public. Symptoms to look out for include persistent cough, fever, weight loss, chest pain, and night sweats.
The Commissioner encourages individuals to seek testing and treatment, highlighting that both diagnostics and treatments for TB are free in state healthcare facilities.
