Opeyemi Bamidele, the Leader of the Senate, defended the National Assembly’s decision to ratify President Bola Tinubu’s state of emergency proclamation in Rivers State, stating that lawmakers should be commended rather than criticized.
He spoke at the 29th convocation of Ekiti State University, where he received an honorary doctorate degree.Bamidele emphasized that the National Assembly acted responsibly and in the interest of peace, treating the emergency rule as a necessary measure to ensure stability in Nigeria.
He argued that the criticism directed at lawmakers, particularly from opposition parties, was unwarranted and emotionally charged rather than rational.
He highlighted that the ratification had alleviated political tension in Rivers State and reiterated that the National Assembly’s actions were aimed at maintaining national security.
Despite facing backlash, he stated that they remain committed to their responsibility and encouraged critics to offer constructive alternatives rather than unfounded attacks.
The Senate leader’s recognition at the convocation came alongside several dignitaries, including the President of the Senate and other key Senate figures. Additionally, he was acknowledged for his contributions to the university’s development, such as the construction of medical hostels and other facilities, which reflect strong ties between the alumni and the institution’s growth.
The Vice-Chancellor praised the university’s improved ranking and noted that increased funding has contributed to its success.
