Operatives from the Zone 2 Police Command in Onikan, Lagos, have apprehended a group involved in the trafficking of girls from Nigeria to Mauritania for purposes of prostitution and sexual exploitation.CSP Umma Ayuba, the Zonal Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Tuesday.
The crackdown took place on March 22 in the Meiran area of Lagos, where members of the Zonal Intelligence Response Squad, led by SP Francis Kpoughul, raided the group’s hideout and arrested two individuals.Ayuba noted that the suspects admitted to their involvement in the trafficking operations.
One suspect revealed that she had been introduced to a woman in Mauritania by another individual who is currently serving a prison sentence for similar offenses.
According to her, the Mauritanian woman had contracted her to recruit young girls under the age of 22 for sex work, offering her ₦50,000 for each girl trafficked.She further disclosed that among those she recruited was her own 19-year-old daughter, and she acknowledged receiving over ₦500,000 from the Mauritanian woman for her efforts.
The second suspect, who was reportedly enlisted by the first to recruit girls as domestic workers in Mauritania, stated that she later realized the girls were intended for sex work.
After sending one girl who was rejected due to age and body size, she decided to withdraw from the operation, realizing the unethical nature of the scheme.
The investigation is ongoing, and the suspects are expected to face charges in court once the inquiry is complete.
