A sudden explosion and fire aboard the LagFerry boat “Igbega Eko” resulted in multiple passengers sustaining injuries and fleeing for safety as the vessel was heading to Victoria Island..The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) confirmed the incident on Thursday morning, stating that its personnel were present to prevent the fire from spreading.
There was a loud bang, and then flames quickly engulfed the vessel. The cause of the explosion remains unclear, but investigations are underway,” a NIWA representative informed Tribune Online.
The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) also acknowledged the situation, mentioning that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
In a statement released by LASWA’s Public Affairs Unit, it was noted that four passengers suffered minor injuries and are currently receiving medical care.
According to LASWA, the fire broke out at approximately 6:45 AM at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu while the LAGFERRY vessel “Igbega Eko” was en route to Victoria Island.
Upon receiving the emergency call, LASWA’s response team promptly arrived at the scene, collaborating with LAGFERRY, boat operators, and first responders to effectively manage the situation.
Fortunately, all passengers and crew were safely evacuated, although four individuals required minor medical attention.
LASWA is conducting a thorough preliminary investigation into the cause of the fire and is working with LAGFERRY and other partners for a comprehensive evaluation. “Safety is our top priority, and we are committed to implementing any necessary recommendations to improve fire prevention measures across Lagos waterways,” the statement emphasized.
Furthermore, LASWA reassured the public that all safety protocols remain in place and that ferry operations continue as scheduled. Passengers are encouraged to stay calm and adhere to safety guidelines while enjoying the waterways, and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
