President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conveyed his profound sorrow over the demise of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, the former governor of the old Oyo State and one of Nigeria’s esteemed intellectuals and public servants.

In a statement released on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the Olunloyo family, as well as to the government and people of Oyo State.

He described the late elder statesman as “a brilliant mind, a patriotic leader, and a dedicated nation-builder.”Dr. Olunloyo, recognized for his exceptional academic prowess, obtained a PhD in applied mathematics and number theory from St. Andrews University in Scotland at just 25 years old. At the age of 27, he had already ascended to the position of commissioner in the old Western Region—a remarkable achievement that set the stage for his lifelong commitment to service in both education and governance.

President Tinubu lauded Dr. Olunloyo’s academic and professional contributions, particularly his foundational role as the inaugural rector of both The Polytechnic Ibadan and the Kwara State Polytechnic. “Dr. Olunloyo will forever be celebrated in academic circles for his brilliance and essential contributions to applied mathematics and number theory.

The sudden end to his administration did not deter him from continuing to serve the nation,” he stated.Emphasizing Dr. Olunloyo’s impact on nation-building and intellectual advancement, President Tinubu declared him a fervent advocate for leveraging education as a catalyst for national transformation.

His legacy in academia and public service will be studied and remembered for generations to come,” he added.

The President offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the late leader and for comfort to those grieving his loss, affirming that Nigeria has lost “a towering intellect and a true patriot.”
