Saudi Arabia has announced a temporary suspension of Umrah, business, and family visit visas for citizens from 14 countries, including Nigeria, Egypt, and India, in preparation for the upcoming Hajj season.
This measure aims to prevent unregistered individuals from attempting the pilgrimage, addressing concerns over rising numbers of unauthorized pilgrims and visa overstays that risk overcrowding and safety. Officials noted that misuse of business or family visit visas for illegal work is also a major concern.
The Saudi foreign ministry emphasized that the new regulations are intended to streamline travel procedures and enhance safety during Hajj, warning that individuals found to be in the Kingdom illegally could face a five-year entry ban.While the visa suspension is in effect, holders of Umrah visas will still be permitted entry until April 13.
The restrictions are expected to last until mid-June, after the pilgrimage concludes. Last year’s Hajj witnessed approximately 1,301 deaths, primarily from heat-related causes, with many victims lacking official permits.
The influx of unregistered pilgrims, particularly from Egypt, has raised safety worries, as they are often denied access to crucial facilities.Under a lottery system, a limited number of Hajj permits are allocated to each participating country, but high costs of official packages drive many to seek unauthorized means of participation.
