The governing council of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has cleared Vice Chancellor Abayomi Fasina of the sexual harassment allegations leveled against him.As reported by OSUN DEFENDER, Fasina faced accusations of sexual harassment and victimization by Folashade Adebayo, a senior lecturer, in late 2024.
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at FUOYE also alleged that Fasina engaged in inappropriate conduct towards Adebayo, who serves as a deputy director in the Directorate of Works and Services.
They claimed that he made advances toward her and subsequently removed her from her position.
These allegations prompted demands for an independent investigation into the university’s financial and administrative practices under Fasina’s leadership.
In response, the council established a committee to investigate the claims of sexual harassment.In a statement issued on Wednesday, Mufutau Ibrahim, the university registrar and secretary of the council, announced that the Vice Chancellor had been exonerated of all charges.
An audio recording purportedly capturing exchanges between Adebayo and Fasina was presented as evidence during the investigation. Ibrahim stated that the council concluded the recording was used to intimidate Fasina into appointing Adebayo as the substantive director of works and services, a decision he was not authorized to make.
The council members reviewed the alleged audio recordings, aided by a translator, and engaged in thorough discussions,” Ibrahim explained.
They determined that there was no evidence of sexual harassment, corroborating earlier findings from the Nigerian police, where Adebayo had asserted that she was not sexually harassed.
The council has directed that Adebayo be reprimanded for damaging the university’s reputation and instructed her to submit a letter of apology to the council within seven days.”The council also expressed concern regarding the university management’s handling of the situation, specifically highlighting that Adebayo had received preferential treatment when her promotion was backdated to 2015 in 2024. The council warned the management against similar actions in the future to prevent irregularities in staff promotions.
Additionally, the council mandated a review of Adebayo’s backdated promotion and announced that the positions for the substantive director of physical planning and the director of works and services would be publicly advertised.
