A fire on Thursday night destroyed at least 12 shops in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Witnesses reported that the blaze started around 10:55 PM at Block A, No. 64, Mayegun Cement Store Market, Agodi-Gate, and continued for over three hours before being brought under control. Significant property damage, amounting to several million naira, occurred due to the fire, which was determined to have been caused by an electrical surge near flammable materials.

On Friday, the General Manager of the state fire service, Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident, stating that the agency received a distress call at 11:02 PM. “After receiving the call at 23:02 on April 10, 2025, about a shop fire at the specified location, our personnel, led by Chief Fire Service Jimoh, quickly responded.
Upon arrival, we found several shops ablaze and acted swiftly to prevent the fire from spreading to other nearby establishments,” Akinyinka said. “While 12 shops were affected, we were able to save property worth billions in the market.
Our team returned to the station at 3:18 AM and remained on standby.”
