Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced a cash prize of ₦10 million for Miss Isioma Sybil Nwosu, who achieved the highest academic distinction as the overall best graduating student from Lagos State University (LASU) in the 2023/2024 session.
Nwosu, hailing from the Department of Biochemistry within the Faculty of Science, graduated with an impressive Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.93.
The announcement was made during LASU’s 28th Convocation Ceremony, which took place at the Buba Marwa Auditorium on the Ojo campus. Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, commended Nwosu for her exceptional academic achievements and encouraged other students to strive for similar excellence.
The ceremony also featured the conferral of various honors, including doctorate degrees, honorary doctorates, and the title of Distinguished Professor to several individuals.
He urged Nigerian leaders to ensure that the educational system evolves to effectively address contemporary challenges.“Education is the backbone of our society,” he stated.
We must cultivate a culture that places as much value on knowledge and innovation as we do on success in fields like entertainment, fashion, or sports.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to empowering students in state-run institutions and fostering the next generation of leaders through strategic enhancements in infrastructure and student welfare.
He highlighted initiatives like the Job Initiative Lagos (JIL), aimed at increasing the employability of final-year students as part of the broader education reforms under the THEMES+ agenda.Reflecting on the graduation of 11,917 students, Sanwo-Olu described the event as a celebration of hard work and a stepping stone toward a future brimming with opportunities.He also praised LASU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, for her transformative leadership and innovative reforms, which have enhanced the university’s prestige both nationally and internationally.
In her speech, Prof. Olatunji-Bello expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its steadfast support, noting that 43 out of 44 academic programs at LASU were accredited during the October–November 2023 assessment.
She announced the introduction of postgraduate diploma and master’s programs under the Africa Centre of Excellence for Innovative and Transformative STEM Education, now open to international students for the first time.
The Chancellor of the university, Prof. Gbolahan Elias (SAN), congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to be exemplary ambassadors for LASU, urging them to remain innovative, focused, and resilient in their journey toward success.In total, 11,917 graduates received various degrees, including:- 971 Diploma certificates- 8,711 First degrees- 2,235 Postgraduate degrees- 302 Postgraduate Diplomas- 1,132 Academic Masters- 639 Professional Masters- 125 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)- 37 Professional Doctoral Degrees
