To enhance access to healthcare, the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) has successfully concluded its annual medical mission in Lagos, deploying over 140 volunteer health professionals to provide essential care services to underserved communities.
The mission showcased a diverse group of healthcare professionals, including internists, cardiologists, surgeons, gynecologists, nurses, and various specialists.Dr. Emmanuel Emeasoba, Chair-elect of the ANPA New Jersey Chapter, reported that more than 800 patients received medical care focused on long-term healing, underscoring the significance of multidisciplinary approaches to treatment.Leading the ANPA Internal Medicine and Cardiology Division’s outreach at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Ebute Metta, Emeasoba highlighted a range of critical services provided, such as specialized cardiology evaluations, internal medicine consultations, and physical therapy for patients recovering from chronic illnesses and musculoskeletal issues.
He noted a significant milestone for the mission: the successful performance of the first-ever gastrointestinal procedures during the outreach, which not only enhanced local medical capacity but also instilled hope in patients who had long awaited such care.
This year’s mission was not just about delivering essential medical services but also about offering an extensive array of support. Volunteer physicians, many coming from the U.S. and Canada, partnered with local healthcare workers to provide general consultations, life-saving surgeries, dental care, vision screenings, gastrointestinal procedures, and numerous educational sessions—all free of charge for patients,” Emeasoba stated.“From early dawn, crowds gathered at designated health centers, including the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and the Federal Medical Centre (FMC). Many patients, including children, the elderly, and adults who had delayed treatment due to financial or logistical barriers, approached with hope and eagerness to receive care.”Emeasoba stressed that the mission aimed for a long-lasting impact beyond immediate treatment:
While providing medical care was our main objective, we also sought to initiate sustainable improvements in Nigeria’s healthcare system. Workshops facilitated knowledge sharing among local medical professionals on best practices and emerging technologies. Discussions with government and institutional stakeholders also aimed at devising strategies to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in Lagos and beyond.
Every patient we treat and every professional we empower brings us one step closer to a future where every Nigerian has access to healthcare,” he affirmed.
The motto, “A Healthier Nigeria in a Healthier World,” continues to inspire the mission—leaving behind not only health improvements for patients but also a fortified foundation for healthcare partnerships and systemic development.
