Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has articulated that Nigerians should not experience poverty given the country’s abundant resources.

He emphasized that while Nigeria is richly endowed, the struggle primarily stems from poor management of its assets.

Obasanjo made these remarks at a dinner hosted in his honor by the Abia State Government on Friday at the Government House in Umuahia. He stated, “Nigerians have no business with poverty because God has blessed us with all we need. If we mismanage what God has given us, we can’t blame God; we must hold ourselves accountable.”He commended Governor Alex Otti of Abia for his transformative efforts in the state, highlighting the widespread recognition of his administration’s achievements.

Obasanjo encouraged the governor to maintain his positive trajectory, asserting that if Nigeria had 18 governors fulfilling their duties effectively, the country could be significantly advanced.Reiterating his concern for the welfare of Nigerians, Obasanjo stressed the importance of good governance over personal relationships, saying, “What matters to me is that the people of this country receive what they deserve, and that is good governance.

He also recalled a past advisory to former Minister of Transport, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, regarding a national railway development plan.

He had directed Amaechi to the archives to uncover this information, underscoring that despite differences, he would continue to offer guidance based on his experience.Governor Otti, in his speech, expressed gratitude for Obasanjo’s support and emphasized the significance of vision and resilience in leadership.

He shared his decade-long political hurdles and reaffirmed his commitment to quality education reforms in Abia.Meanwhile, Amaechi urged political figures in Abia to begin preparations for the 2027 general elections, reflecting on how the value of effective governance often becomes apparent only after the departure of less competent leaders.

He recognized Obasanjo’s consistent excellence in leadership and emphasized the need for the people of Abia to support capable leaders like Otti in future elections.

Political actors must mobilize now; we shouldn’t wait until it’s too late to protect our progress and strive for true democratic success come 2028,” he stated. In their respective speeches, Chief Ginger Onwusibe, the lawmaker for Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency, and Sen. Darlington Nwokocha, the acting National Secretary of the Labour Party, both expressed their satisfaction in being part of Abia’s success narrative.
