On Monday, officials from the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) conducted flight inspections at Gateway International Airport in Ogun State, marking a significant step toward the initiation of commercial flight operations. After completing the inspections, Miri Selzing, Manager of Flight Calibration Services at NAMA, noted that the purpose of their visit was to verify the proposed operational procedures established for the airport.

He emphasized that this is a substantial undertaking and cannot be resolved quickly.Selzing stated, “We are here to evaluate the proposed procedures defined for the airport.

This is a critical process that requires thorough validation. We’ve reviewed the procedures in the air and will analyze our findings when we return to our headquarters.

Based on that analysis, we can make recommendations and necessary modifications.

He praised the airport’s physical condition, highlighting the runway’s impressive length—approximately four kilometers, the longest in the country—as well as the quality of the terminal building.

Overall, everything appears to be in excellent shape, reflecting the hard work invested here,” he remarked.Selzing commended the Ogun State government for establishing such a remarkable airport in a relatively short time. He advocated for the installation of an Instrument Landing System along with other navigational aids to enhance flight operations at the facility.

He expressed optimism that, given the current progress, the airport will soon serve as a destination for various aircraft types, capable of managing diversions from Lagos, Ibadan, and Ilorin.“

We commend the Ogun State government for this commendable project, and we are ready to provide support as more facilities are developed at the airport,” the NAMA representative added.

Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ade Akinsanya, also commented on the project, informing that the NAMA team had successfully completed the “23 and the 05” checks and identified the necessary waypoints.Akinsanya noted that once the flight checks are fully accomplished, the information will be made available online for easy access.

This is one of the final elements we need to address in order to obtain commercial approval,” the Commissioner explained.Regarding the status of the airport’s development, Akinsanya stated that while airport construction is an ongoing process globally, Gateway International Airport is 97% complete.

He confirmed that critical components such as the control tower, air traffic control personnel, firefighting services, and other essential facilities have all been established.
