Senate Spokesman Dismisses Coalition Against Tinubu as “Content Creation
Segun Sowunmi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has urged Peter Obi to consider rejoining the PDP in preparation for the 2027 presidential election to enhance his prospects.
Sowunmi, who served as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, left the PDP in June 2022, citing difficulties in making “constructive contributions” within the party.In a recent interview on the ‘Mic On Podcast’ hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, Sowunmi emphasized that “Obi needs a bigger platform” as the 2027 elections approach.
He stated, “Looking ahead to 2027, the PDP will open its processes, announce when the forms are available, and anyone confident enough to contest should step forward
If I were Peter Obi, I would return to the PDP and stake a strong claim for the presidential ticket.
This party was initially founded by the late Alex Ekwueme; therefore, I don’t understand why the Igbo, along with southern leaders and other influential figures in the PDP, cannot unite and say ‘this is our candidate’.
Sowunmi noted that if Obi could attract over six million votes without significant backing, the potential for success would greatly increase with the support of 12 governors and a robust grassroots network.
We have established our presence in every region, but have yet to fully engage the South East.
That said, Obi is free to make his own choices. If he brings his passionate supporters into the PDP as a presidential candidate, I am confident that he could secure the South East, South South, the Christian North, and North Central,” he added.
It is important to note that Sowunmi clarified his comments were purely hypothetical in response to questions about potential political alliances ahead of the 2027 election.
Meanwhile, discussions among key opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, have emerged regarding the formation of a coalition aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
In response, Yemi Adaramodu, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs and a member of the APC from Ekiti South, has dismissed these coalition efforts as mere “content creation” by various political actors. During an APC caucus meeting in Ado-Ekiti, where they rallied support for President Bola Tinubu’s second term, Adaramodu expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership, citing the positive impact of his economic reforms and comprehensive security strategies over the past two years.
He urged Nigerians to regard the opposition’s calls for a coalition as political entertainment that will not hinder Tinubu’s anticipated success, encouraging continued support for the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
