The Lagos State House of Assembly has summoned Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, the Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), along with the commission’s commissioners, to appear before the Assembly and provide detailed explanations regarding their plans and preparations for the upcoming local council elections set for July.
During a plenary session held yesterday, lawmakers expressed concerns about the perceived haste in LASIEC’s processes and the inadequacy of the electoral guidelines that have been released.
Oladipo Ajomale, Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, Petitions, Human Rights, and LASIEC, voiced strong reservations about the situation, claiming that LASIEC appears to be rushing the electoral process, and that the guidelines do not adequately address public concerns regarding the elections.
He emphasized the need for LASIEC to address numerous unanswered questions from the public. “The Nigerian constitution empowers us to summon LASIEC to clarify issues related to the upcoming elections.
We are uncertain about the electoral method they plan to use—whether it will involve BVAS or the traditional methods,” he stated.
He also raised issues regarding the recruitment of ad-hoc staff and the management of allocated funds.Kehinde Joseph, the lawmaker representing Alimosho Constituency II, underscored the necessity for accountability and transparency, asserting that LASIEC must explain how taxpayer money has been spent.
Additionally, Solomon Bonu, who represents Badagry Constituency 1, acknowledged complaints from opposition parties and lamented the inadequacy of voter education efforts.
Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, reinforced the need for LASIEC to provide a thorough briefing on their election preparations.
He officially directed the Clerk of the House to summon the LASIEC Chairman and commissioners to clarify their plans for the elections.
