A massive explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port, Iran’s largest commercial port, occurred on Saturday, leading to at least 25 deaths and around 800 injuries, as reported by local media.
The explosion was likely caused by a fire involving hazardous materials and resulted in multiple container blasts. Sodium perchlorate, a key component in missile fuel, is believed to have been involved.
The explosion’s shockwave was felt 50 kilometers away, causing significant damage to port infrastructure.Despite the fire still smoldering, officials reported that the situation was stabilizing, with operations resuming.
The incident heavily impacted the area, leading to the closure of schools and offices in nearby Bandar Abbas due to air pollution concerns. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian ordered an investigation into the incident, while regional countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia expressed their condolences. Live footage showed ongoing firefighting efforts, with emergency services responding to the widespread casualties.
