The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for several key reforms during their May Day rally at Eagle Square, Abuja. Central among their demands is the extension of the current retirement age of 65 years or 40 years of service—initially applied to teachers, health professionals, and judges—to all public servants.

They also emphasized the need for salary adjustments aligned with current economic realities, transparency in tax policies, and the rejection of tax bills that exclude workers’ input.

The NLC criticized the ongoing privatization and high tariffs in sectors like telecommunications and electricity, advocating for reforms that prioritize public interest over corporate profits.

They demanded the reversal of the failed electricity sector privatization and called for better governance, transparency, and electoral reforms to strengthen democracy.Security concerns were highlighted, with calls to end widespread violence and ensure the safety of workers.

The labour movement also emphasized workers’ rights, including safe workplaces, freedom of association, and the prompt payment of allowances, pensions, and gratuities to retired workers.

They urged reforms to improve pension benefits, including automatic adjustments for inflation and the establishment of a minimum pension to ensure dignity in retirement.Additionally, the NLC condemned actions that suppress civic space, such as the suspension of the Rivers State government, and called for the protection of democratic norms. Overall, they stressed the importance of dialogue with the government, defending workers’ welfare, and ensuring that essential services serve the public interest.
