Dr. Emana Ambrose-Amawhe, who ran as the deputy governorship candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 Cross River State election, has officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), along with her supporters.During a defection ceremony at her ward in Edem Odo, Akpabuyo LGA, on Friday, Dr. Ambrose-Amawhe stated her decision was driven by the development progress made by the APC at both state and national levels.”I chose to switch to the All Progressives Congress,” she explained. “Firstly, I see the excellent work being done by my governor, His Excellency Bassey Otu. Only the blind would miss such positive developments.
I’m thrilled to become a part of the All Progressives family. I was the deputy governorship candidate for the PDP and a daughter of Cross River South.”Addressing national concerns, she added, “Some may say things are difficult, the economy isn’t improving, and so on. I want to emphasize that good things take time.
The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has made the right appointments. Gradually, day by day, we are moving towards economic improvement. These factors, combined with other positive aspects, are why I, as a Cross Riverian, decided to return to the All Progressive Congress.”Dr. Ambrose-Amawhe clarified that her defection was not motivated by personal gain or seeking an appointment. Instead, she aims to collaborate with those in power to bring democratic benefits to her community. She urged those in opposition to contribute to building the state rather than simply criticizing online.”I am a nation-builder, and that’s why I am now part of the APC,” she stated. “No one is being forced to join.
We need strong opposition parties. When opposition parties are disorganized and plagued by internal disagreements, it’s clear they aren’t prepared to govern.
As a business-minded person, I go where people are serious and actively working towards their goals.”She encouraged critics to “come in, share your ideas, partner with us, and join hands to build a better Cross River and a better Nigeria,” rather than being “keyboard warriors.”Welcoming the new members, APC state secretary Patrick Asikpo cautioned them against bringing conflict or division into the party, assuring them they would receive the same privileges as all other APC members. “Let me assure you that a complicated peace is better than a small war,” he said.
Today, all our brothers and sisters have joined a great party, the APC. All privileges and benefits for APC members are now yours. There is no ‘new’ or ‘old’ APC. You are an APC member from today.”High Chief Edem Duke, former Minister of Tourism and the ward leader for Edem Odo, expressed optimism that the APC would easily win the 2027 election following the defection of such prominent figures.
I am very pleased because this is the defection of potentially the most senior political office holder from the PDP,” he remarked. “Her presence at the ward today signals to other parties that the political landscape and architecture of Cross River State have shifted. It is changing for the better and in favor of the APC.
