The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is deeply outraged by the egregious negligence exhibited by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), which has led to widespread despair among Nigerian students and, most tragically, resulted in the loss of a promising young life in Lagos.
JAMB’s admission of errors in the recently released UTME results, especially in Lagos and five South East states, exposes a grave failure and incompetence within the institution.
This disastrous lapse has shattered the aspirations of countless students, inflicted severe psychological trauma, and, in this tragic case, caused the untimely death of a young scholar.
This is not merely an administrative mistake—it is an institutional disgrace.In light of the severity of this crisis, NANS demands the following immediate and unwavering actions:One. Immediate resignation of the JAMB Registrar – Prof. Ishaq Oloyede must step down without delay.
The leadership responsible for this catastrophe cannot continue to oversee an examination body entrusted with the future of Nigerian students.
2. Compensation to the family of the deceased student –
JAMB must accept full responsibility and provide financial, psychological, and legal support to the grieving family for the irreparable harm caused.
3. Comprehensive overhaul of JAMB’s examination process – An immediate restructuring of JAMB’s result-processing system is necessary, with independent oversight to guarantee transparency, accuracy, and fairness.
4.Fair and transparent rescheduling of examinations for affected candidates – While JAMB has announced a rescheduled UTME for three hundred seventy-nine thousand nine hundred ninety-seven students, NANS insists on absolute transparency and integrity in this process. We will not tolerate further incompetence or manipulation.
This incident is a stark affront to the Nigerian educational system and an insult to the sacrifices made by students and parents nationwide. We call on the Federal Government to intervene decisively.
Justice must be served, reforms implemented, and accountability enforced. Anything less would be a betrayal of Nigeria’s future.Enough is enough! Nigerian students will no longer remain passive while systemic failures threaten their aspirations.
