Russian strikes overnight resulted in at least 12 fatalities in Ukraine, according to officials on Sunday.

The attacks occurred amid ongoing hostilities, with Kyiv and Moscow exchanging fire even as they completed their largest prisoner swap since the invasion began.Ukrainian emergency services described the night as one of “terror,” noting that Russia launched a second consecutive night of significant air strikes, including attacks on Kyiv, the capital.

The recent assaults coincided with the completion of a major prisoner exchange—1,000 captured soldiers and civilians from each side—marking the largest such swap since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The fatalities included two children, aged 8 and 12, as well as a 17-year-old, all killed in the northwestern Zhytomyr region, officials reported.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks, stating on social media that “without truly strong pressure on the Russian leadership, this brutality cannot be stopped.

He added, “The silence of America, the silence of others around the world only encourages Putin,” and emphasized that sanctions will be effective.European Union’s chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, called for “the strongest international pressure on Russia to stop this war.”

She described the recent strikes as evidence of Russia’s intent to cause more suffering and the destruction of Ukraine, expressing sorrow that children were among the victims.

The renewed wave of attacks followed Russia’s launch of 14 ballistic missiles and 250 drones overnight Friday into Saturday, which wounded 15 people, according to Ukrainian officials. Ukraine’s military reported intercepting a total of 45 Russian missiles and 266 attack drones during the same period.
