The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended 17 individuals and confiscated several vehicles during a coordinated operation targeting illegal mining activities in Kogi State.

The operation, executed by the NSCDC Mining Marshals, occurred in the Odiagbo-Okaba district within Ankpa Local Government Area.In a statement released on Wednesday by NSCDC spokesperson Afolabi Babawale, it was disclosed that three trucks and 39 motorcycles suspected of being used for illegal mining were seized during the raid.

This crackdown was prompted by numerous complaints from local residents concerning environmental damage and public health risks allegedly caused by unauthorized mining activities in the area.The NSCDC Mining Marshal initiative, a collaborative effort between the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and the Ministry of Interior, was established to enforce mining laws, curb illegal operations, and safeguard Nigeria’s mineral resources.

The statement highlighted that Assistant Commandant of the Corps, John Attah, led the recent operation. NSCDC Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, reaffirmed the corps’ dedication to fighting the economic sabotage associated with illegal mining and emphasized ongoing efforts to protect national assets.
