Athletes representing Ogun State at the 22nd National Sports Festival on Wednesday caused a disruption at the Games Village located at Babcock University, as they protested the unpaid allowances.

The protest led to other athletes and officials being stranded, with reports indicating that buses transporting athletes to various event venues were halted.

Videos and photos circulated by officials at the Games Village showed Ogun athletes in tracksuits blocking the gates, beginning their demonstration as early as 5:30 a.m.One Ogun State athlete confirmed to PUNCH Online that they held a meeting about the protest the night before and proceeded with their plans this morning.

The athlete stated that they had not received their allowances and were uncertain about the amount they were due from the state.Prior to the festival, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun had promised monetary rewards of N2.5 million for each gold medalist, N1.5 million for silver, and N1 million for bronze winners. Currently, Ogun State ranks third on the medals table with a total of 48 gold, 38 silver, and 47 bronze medals.
