Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on all residents of Edo and Nigerians nationwide to reflect on the enduring lessons of June 12 and renew their commitment to democracy, justice, and unity.In a statement issued by his media aide, Fred Itua, on Thursday, Governor Okpebholo emphasized that June 12 stands as a potent reminder of the sacrifices made by patriotic Nigerians who championed the cause of genuine democracy.
He urged citizens to protect the hard-earned freedoms and democratic achievements gained over the years.He stated, “As we observe June 12, our Democracy Day, we are reminded of the unwavering resolve of Nigerians who, on that significant day in 1993, united in voice to uphold the popular will.“It is a day to honor the memory of Chief M.K.O. Abiola and all those who played vital roles in the struggle for the democracy we cherish today.
The governor also highlighted his administration’s commitment to people-focused governance, noting that the ‘SHINE’ agenda aims to deliver tangible improvements in the lives of Edo residents across sectors such as security, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, and education.
He further remarked, “Our government operates on the foundation of democratic principles and a firm belief that governance must respond to the needs and aspirations of our people.“We are dedicated to ensuring that the benefits of democracy are felt broadly, fostering peace, progress, and economic prosperity for all.”Governor Okpebholo urged Edo citizens to remain actively engaged in the democratic process by holding leaders accountable and contributing positively to the development of the state.
