The Speaker of the Delta House of Assembly, Mr. Dennis Guwor, announced that over the past year of the 8th Assembly, the House considered a total of 16 bills.Guwor made this disclosure during a press briefing held in Asaba on Friday, to mark the second anniversary of the 8th Assembly.He explained that the House received 16 bills in total—eight executive bills and eight private members’ bills. Out of these, seven bills have been passed by the House, with six receiving assent from the State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori.
One bill is currently being prepared for the governor’s assent.
The remaining eight bills are still under consideration.Additionally, nine bills received during the first session have gone through the third reading, been passed, and also received gubernatorial assent during this period.Among the bills passed and signed into law by the governor are: the State Child Rights (Amendment) Law, 2024; the Amended Revised Appropriation Law, 2024; the State College of Health Technology Ovrode Law, 2024; the Southern Delta University (Establishment) Law; and the 2025 Appropriation Law.Other enacted laws include the 2024 Supplementary Appropriation Law; the State Polytechnic Burutu (Amendment) Law, 2024; the State Urban and Regional Planning Law, 2024; the State Structure for Signage and Advertisement Agency (Amendment) Law, 2024; and the State Film and Video Censor’s Board Law, 2024. Also passed were the Registration and Regulation of Private Veterinary Clinics Law, 2024; the Special Offences Court (Amendment) Law, 2024; the Pet Control and Responsible Ownership Law, 2024; the Human Trafficking (Prohibition) Law, 2024; and the Electricity Power Sector Law, 2024.Guwor emphasized that these laws aim to promote good governance, uphold the rule of law, and enhance the welfare and security of Delta State residents.
He further revealed that the House received 72 motions, of which 68 were approved after thorough debate.
The Assembly also screened and confirmed nominees for various government positions, including Commissioners, members of the State Executive Council, and chairmen, directors-general, and members of agencies, boards, and commissions.Furthermore, the House received six petitions from constituents, which were meticulously investigated and considered by the Public Petitions Committee.
To strengthen local governance, the Assembly also screened and confirmed nominees for appointment as secretaries to the 25 local government councils in the state.Guwor reiterated the Assembly’s dedication to enacting laws that improve the state’s wellbeing, emphasizing that the primary role of government is to ensure peace, security, and the welfare of its people.
He also acknowledged ongoing security concerns in some parts of the state, which have experienced security breaches and continued challenges.
