The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has donated a substantial shipment of medical supplies to the Taraba State Ministry of Health. The donation aims to support the treatment and management of cervical cancer, Lassa fever, and cholera across the state.
The handover ceremony was held at the Ministry of Health headquarters in Jalingo, with key health officials and stakeholders in attendance. Leading the NEDC delegation, Dr. Batulu Isa Mohammed explained that the intervention follows recent training of Taraba-based doctors in Gombe State.
It is intended to ease the treatment burden, especially for women facing high costs associated with cervical cancer care.
These drugs and materials will provide much-needed relief to patients, ensuring they receive timely and effective treatment,” she stated. Dr. Batulu emphasized the importance of preventive care and assured that the distribution plan would ensure equitable allocation of supplies across all zones of Taraba.
She also urged increased public health awareness ahead of the rainy season, which often leads to a rise in disease outbreaks. She reaffirmed NEDC’s commitment to collaborating closely with the Taraba State Government to strengthen healthcare delivery.
Taraba State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Buma Bodiya, expressed appreciation for the support, calling it a significant boost to the state’s health initiatives under Governor Agbu Kefas.
This support aligns perfectly with the governor’s vision to improve healthcare access and outcomes in Taraba,” he said.
He noted recent cholera outbreaks in Chinkai, Wukari LGA, and announced that medications had already been dispatched to Karim Lamido to prevent further cases.
He also disclosed that Lassa fever medications recently arrived from India, following Governor Kefas’s engagement with the Federal Minister of Health.Dr. Bodiya appealed for further assistance from NEDC to expand pharmaceutical storage capacity, proposing upgrades to the Central Medical Store in Jalingo and the construction of additional storage facilities in the three senatorial districts to improve distribution and management of supplies.
He also called for urgent support in procuring anti-snake venom, citing increased snakebite cases during the rainy season and the high costs of treatment.
