The recent implementation of the “no bra, no exam” policy by Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, has sparked widespread controversy.
A viral video circulating on X shows university officials inspecting female students during examinations, with some students lining up to be frisked to determine whether they are wearing underwear. While some students appeared to find the situation amusing, others seemed visibly uncomfortable.
The footage has elicited mixed reactions from social media users, including the president of the OOU students’ union. Some supporters praised the management’s stance, viewing it as a measure to uphold discipline and modesty. Conversely, critics have argued that the policy is misplaced and unnecessary..
Comr Muizz Olatunji, also known as MAO, the president of the OOU students’ union, referenced the institution’s existing dress code, which addresses indecent dressing.
He explained that the policy aims to promote modesty among students, citing a section of the student handbook that forbids attire revealing sensitive body parts such as breasts, buttocks, nipples, and the belly button.Olatunji stated, “The dress code policy has been in place for some time to encourage modesty among students.
He added that the union is currently engaging with the university administration to find alternative ways to address issues related to dress code violations, emphasizing respectful and dignified interactions.He further urged female students to avoid dressing in ways that could incite lust, aligning with the broader goal of maintaining a respectful academic environment. Addressing the viral video and the policy, Olatunji noted, “I expected the discussion to focus on exploring alternative enforcement methods, especially as exams commenced yesterday. Instead, it appears the agenda is different.
He concluded by reaffirming that “No bra, no entry” is not a new policy at OOU.
The university’s dress code aims to create a distraction-free environment and uphold its values of modesty and respect.
