The South-West Caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday distanced itself from the coalition of opposition political parties, urging all members to stay united, remain steadfast, and continue supporting their leaders within the zone as they navigate various issues at both the zonal and national levels.
This was articulated in a communique read by the Zonal Publicity Secretary of the party, Sanya Atofarati, following a meeting held at the PDP Zonal Secretariat in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
A coalition of opposition parties in Nigeria has adopted the African Democratic Congress as its platform for the 2027 general elections.
The decision was reached during a meeting attended by prominent opposition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi; former Senate President David Mark; ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai; ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi; and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, among others.Atofarati emphasized that the PDP had resolved to intensify efforts to secure victories in upcoming by-elections in Ogun State, as well as the Local Government Council elections in Lagos State.
The party also praised Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and his Osun State counterpart, Ademola Adeleke, along with other party leaders in the zone, for their relentless efforts in ensuring the stability and growth of the PDP as the leading political party in the region.
He expressed confidence that the PDP, as the party of choice in the region and across Nigeria, would achieve a sweeping victory in the forthcoming elections.
The party reaffirmed its unwavering loyalty and commitment to the PDP’s unity, stability, progress, and success at all levels within the zone and nationwide.
The caucus reaffirms that the PDP in the South-West is intact and urges all party organs and relevant bodies to remain focused and work diligently toward successfully conducting the upcoming National Convention, which will further strengthen and reposition the PDP for the challenges ahead,” the statement read.
The caucus clarified that it is not part of the reported coalition and called on all PDP members to stay united, steadfast, and supportive of their leaders in the zone while navigating issues at both the zonal and national levels.
However, it also endorsed the position of the PDP’s National Working Committee, stating that the party remains open to collaborating with like-minded citizens in a collective effort to rescue Nigeria from the stranglehold of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The caucus demanded the immediate release of the withheld Osun State Local Government Allocation by the Federal Government, describing the withholding as unconstitutional, unwarranted, and a violation of the rights and welfare of Osun State residents.
Expressing grave concern over the deteriorating insecurity and economic hardship under the APC administration, the caucus echoed Governor Makinde’s declaration that the 2027 election will be a contest between Nigerians and the APC, with the PDP ultimately emerging victorious.
In conclusion, the party urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, resolute, and united under the PDP’s leadership as they work to rescue the nation from current misrule.
