Students of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, have begun conducting night patrols to address the ongoing robbery attacks by suspected criminals.
In an interview, the President of the FUNAAB Student Union Government, Olamilekan Michael, reported that armed robbers had attacked the area twice last week, stealing students’ personal belongings. Although the university is currently on holiday, some students still residing in hostels and those on Industrial Training were affected.Michael explained, Because some students are off-campus and on holiday, and others are on IT and SIWES, the situation is challenging.
To cope, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to do some self-policing.
The robbers come armed with guns and cutlasses, break windows, and only target students who are present.
They usually come in with guns to threaten students into surrendering their phones and sometimes ask for phone passwords.
He added that the union had issued multiple statements about the incidents.
A joint statement signed by Michael and the union’s Public Relations Officer, Ayomide Oyekan, detailed the events.
The first report mentioned a robbery on July 9 at two off-campus hostels, Accord and Isolu, and called for increased security in student areas outside the main campus.A subsequent update revealed another attack in the early hours at the Zoo and Oluwo areas, affecting students in those locations.
The union expressed concern over the continued incidents, especially during the holiday period when many students are away from campus, and extended sympathies to those affected.
