The Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Sunday, distributed 500 electricity transformers to communities across all 44 Local Government Areas as part of his efforts to enhance rural electrification.During the flag-off ceremony held at the Rural Electricity Board premises on Maganda Road, Yusuf announced that the transformers—comprising 500KVA, 300KVA, and 200KVA units—were sourced from reputable international manufacturers.

This marks the first phase in our plan to distribute 500 transformers of various capacities throughout the 44 Local Government Areas,” Yusuf stated, according to a statement signed by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, which was shared with Arewa.

He described the initiative as a vital step toward fulfilling a key campaign promise to improve electricity access in underserved communities.“Today’s event signifies another milestone in delivering on our promise to the good people of Kano State, especially those in rural areas who have long been deprived of reliable electricity,” he said.

The governor further explained that the project is being implemented in partnership with the local government councils, with transformers allocated according to each community’s specific power needs.

Access to reliable and stable electricity is not just a fundamental necessity; it is a catalyst for economic development, industrial growth, improved healthcare, quality education, and overall social well-being,” he emphasized.

He called on communities to take ownership of the infrastructure and to protect the transformers from vandalism or theft, highlighting that proper maintenance is essential for their sustainability.

Additionally, the governor revealed that the state-owned electricity company has begun evacuating power from the 10-megawatt Tiga Hydropower Generation Plant to boost energy supply within the state.

He assured that more alternative energy initiatives would be launched to ensure a consistent power supply across Kano, particularly to support small and medium enterprises. In his remarks, the Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, Alhaji AbdulKadir Abdulsalam, described the intervention as a “milestone achievement” that would benefit local businesses, schools, and religious institutions. Also, the Chairperson of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Kano, Hajiya Sa’adu Yusha’u, praised the initiative, saying it would promote peace and development within the benefiting communities.

The Emir of Karaye, Alhaji Muhammad Muhammad Maharaz, commended the administration’s rapid development efforts, noting that its people-centered projects were alleviating the hardships faced by residents in rural areas.
